“Music Mondays” Returns

Monday evenings, throughout the summer (from mid-July on), the public is invited once again to North University Community Branch Library for a series of hour-long concerts on our outdoor patio. These free concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a variety of musical styles. This year, Music Mondays includes the following lineup:

July 13: George Svobada, classical/flamenco guitarist.

July 20: Local Condition, bluegrass, folk, and depression blues.

July 27: Bayou Brothers, New Orleans zydeco, blues, and R & B.

August 3: Travis Daudert Jazz Trio

August 10: Leonard Patton, keyboardist and Jazz/R&B song vocalist.

August 17: Paula Simmons Quaretto Sorrento, string quartet.

August 24: Calafia Music Guild, Renaissance music played with period instruments.

August 31: Peter Rutman Band, blues and jazz.

September 7: Labor Day, Library closed.

September 14: Ebony Fourest Clarinet Quartet, classical, pop and jazz.

The Friends of the NUC Library will be holding its next monthly outdoor book sale on Saturday, June 13 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Proceeds benefit the NUC Library. A bag of books is only $3.00.

The event will also be a karaoke book sale—sing a song, win a book!




Friends Bookstore Accepting Donations

The Friends of the NUC Library bookstore continues to accept donations of books to sell in our store. Revenue from these sales goes directly to support this library’s programs and purchases. Donations can be brought directly into the bookstore. If your donation is too large for you to transport, call Ed Threat at 858-220-3312 and arrangements will be made for pickup.




Children’s Book Festival: May 9

On Saturday, May 9 the San Diego Children’s Book Festival will take place at the North University Community Library and the Nobel Recreation Center. The event runs from 10:00am until 4:00pm. In conjunction with the Children’s Book Festival, the Friends of the North University Community Library will be holding an outdoor book sale (proceeds benefit the library). A bag of books (of your choice) will be just $3.00.

Starring Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), The Road Home tells the tale of Zhao Di (Ziyi) and how she met the love of her life, Luo Changyu — a new schoolteacher assigned to teach the child.

Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball) directs this touching story of family, friendship and bravery, based on the best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini.

Multiple Oscar-winning film. What if a penniless William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) fell in love with a noblewoman (Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow) while struggling to write a comedy with the unlikely title “Romeo and Ethel the Sea Pirate’s Daughter?” Might the emotional turmoil inspire him to recraft the play into a tragedy with a more familiar-sounding name?
