NOTED JOURNALIST TO SPEAK AT THE NORTH UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY BRANCH LIBRARY
A FAMILY HISTORY EXTRAORDINAIRE

The North University Community Branch Library is delighted to host award-winning journalist James Oliver Goldsborough at an author’s reading and book signing on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. A former Edward R. Murrow Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and variously an editor, columnist, foreign correspondent, and reporter for over forty years on national and international affairs, Mr. Goldsborough’s byline has appeared in many, many prestigious publications, including Newsweek magazine, the New York Herald Tribune, the San Francisco Examiner, Fortune magazine, the New York Times Magazine, Politique Etrangere and Foreign Affairs. He now resides in San Diego where he was the featured political columnist at the San Diego Union-Tribune for fourteen years and one of the original contributors (along with Neil Morgan) of the online newspaper Voice of San Diego. His first book, Rebel Europe: Living with a Changing Continent, was hailed by Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times as “the most important book I have read in years.”

At the North University Community Branch Library Mr. Goldsborough will be discussing his newest title, Misfortunes of Wealth, published this past October. Spanning several generations and the country from east to west, it is a compelling, stranger than fiction account of a family tree populated with Revolutionary and Civil War generals (including the only two brothers to serve as generals on opposing side during the Civil War), political leaders and industrial barons. Running through the narrative is the thread of inherited wealth and its impact—not always positive—on the lives of the author’s fascinating ancestors.
